Ken Scott – Lead Coach
Ken Scott is your lead coach. Ken has over thirty-five years’ experience as a photographer and many years experience in coaching and leading development workshops in business. He is well known for his inspirational photography presentations to clubs and organisations across the country, and for his sensitive, person-centred approach to photography appraisal (or ‘judging’, to use camera club speak).
Ken’s brand, Touching the LightTTL, has become synonymous with a responsive and mindful approach to photography – both to to everyday moments of seeing and to the mountain landscapes and light in which his photography grew up.
Since 2008, Ken has been making pictures daily – at the time of writing over 2400 consecutive days – giving him an unparalleled insight into the ups and downs of creativity and the joy to be had in seeing with fresh eyes. A daily project reveals patterns of mood and awareness that would otherwise go unnoticed. Aside from the practice in using the camera, a daily project is an exercise in everyday observation and self-discovery, in seeing and responding to the world around us.
Here’s what he has to say:
Above everything else, I have learned that creativity happens when we least expect it: at times of good flow and frustration alike. When we are mindful of our mood and we do it anyway, when we are tuned in and aware, then photographs come to us naturally. Often, the harder I look, the less I see …
Allowing ourselves to experience the place fully and creating the right conditions for this flow to happen is the key to our workshop style.
With Ken you will find understanding, empathy and an engaging sense of what is possible.
Ken first discovered Las Alpujarras when taking part in a week-long workshop in 2001, one that had a profound influence on his life and work over the next ten years. In 2006 he became embroiled in an epic expedition on Mulhacén, the highest peak of the Sierra Nevada, falling ill on the mountain at the height of severe winter storms. The experience strengthened an emotional attachment to the area that has brought him back many times.
We are also looking to run further workshops in the Pyrenees and in the Marina Alta mountains inland of the Costa Blanca, areas in which Ken has extensive knowledge from his walks and climbs.
Ken is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, and has a BSc (Hons) 1st class in psychology. He also has diplomas in life coaching and sports coaching.
